Indeed, tourism has come to a halt in Nosy Be and we rely in tourism to go at sea and collect data on the whale sharks. After closing its borders for 6 months, Madagascar opened its borders again in October, to then close again due to the second wave of COVID-19 in Europe. As a result, few tourists could make it and while our local partners occasionally go out at sea, we need regular access to the sharks during the whole season to collect usable population data.

However, thanks to local operators, we know that some regular sharks made it back, like Ernest and Roméo. One of the good things about the pandemic is that whale sharks can feed undisturbed!

No sight of Michel however, and the situation in Madagascar is dire. The pandemic is causing significant damage to developing countries relying on global tourism.

We are continuing our educational activities locally. Thanks to a social media fundraiser and your contributions, we have secured extra funds to organise trips at sea for Malagasy children. We are using this unique opportunity to show them marine wildlife! These activities will start very soon so stay posted!

As always, we are busy processing data and writing publications, and applying for grants as all our usual funds from tourism are compromised for now. The current situation is particularly challenging for all field-led conservation organisations, and many grants have stopped giving out funds. We are hopeful tourism will resume next year and that we can continue our important work.

Stay safe everyone, and stay posted for updates on our social media!

Ps.

Ps.
