Nosy Be, the tourist capital of Madagascar, is currently experiencing an unprecedented economic crisis. Since March 2020, the borders are closed.<\/p>\n
The inhabitants have\u00a0lost direct and indirect jobs, and are switching to other activities. The priority is to work the land, and harvest the sea, to feed themselves,\u00a0while waiting for the island’s only economic activity to resume.<\/p>\n
Obviously, the families can no longer afford to send their children to school, considering the additional registration fees, school supplies and uniforms. What’s more, it’s an extra help to work.<\/p>\n
The Guardians of the Ocean project, that we initiated in 2018, and its school-based education programme is meaningless without its students. Their education and awareness is essential to avoid a doomed \u00ab\u00a0COVID\u00a0\u00bb generation. Children must be educated, it is a right and at this stage, our duty to help them.<\/p>\n
On behalf of the MADA Megafauna association and the Madagascar Whale Shark Project foundation, we are launching an emergency fundraising campaign in order to fund access to education and cover schooling costs for the children in Nosy Be (50 EUR per child, 60 in kindergarten, 300 in primary, 320 in secondary) this year,\u00a0as well as continue\u00a0our environmental education programme, the Guardians of the Ocean, as our funding obtained in 2018 is coming to an end very soon.<\/p>\n
